...as Oyo State Farmers Embark on Fitness Walk
As part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2025 World Food Day, farmers across Oyo State on Tuesday participated in a Farmers’ Fitness Walk around major streets of the Ibadan metropolis.
The exercise, which witnessed a large turnout of farmers and agricultural stakeholders, aimed at promoting healthy living and creating awareness on the importance of food production and household farming.
Addressing farmers and marketers at Oje Market, the Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye said the fitness walk was part of efforts to encourage residents to engage in farming, especially home gardening, to complement the government’s drive toward food security.
He noted that the initiative aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing dependence on external food sources.
In his remarks, the chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Oyo State Chapter, Mr. Adewumi Abass, urged market men and women to ensure that the reduction in prices at the farm gate is reflected in their sales to the public.
He described the present administration as farmer-friendly and called on farmers to ensure that this goodwill translates into better welfare for their communities.
Mr. Abass further admonished all farmers to participate actively in the grand finale of the 2025 World Food Day celebration, scheduled for Thursday, October 16,2025.
He encouraged them to showcase their products and God-given talents to the world, reinforcing Oyo State’s reputation as the Pacesetter State in agriculture.
Also speaking, the coordinator of the Small-Scale Women Farmers Organisation of Nigeria (SWOFON), Oyo State Chapter, Mrs. Atinuke Akinbade, commended the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde for celebrating farmers in a grand style.
She described the initiative as a morale booster and a clear demonstration that farmers remain central to the state’s development agenda.
