Food Security: Oyo Govt Begins Distribution of First Phase motorcycles to Agric Extension Officers.
Oyo State Government on Tuesday distributed fifteen (15) Bajaj motorcycles to Agricultural Extension Agents across the state to improve their job performances and boost productivity, profitability in the agricultural value chain.
Speaking at the State Secretariat, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye said that Gov. Seyi Makinde having realised challenges facing the agric extension agents in the state approved the purchase of fifteen (15) motorcycles under phase 1, saying this would enhance their activities and as well enhance farmers to have access to information as to agricultural practices.
He hinted that 131 Agric Extension Agents were recruited across the cadets include veterinary Doctors to fill up the retired one, adding that this would enhance their activities and in return improves food security in the state.
He explained that the importance of Extension Agents in food security cannot be overemphasized, adding that they are the link between the researchers and farmers.
He maintained that the Extension Agents are the ones that provide adequate information to small holder farmers on innovation and technologies that will enhance production and at large improve farmers stander of living.
According to Olasunkanmi 'one of the major challenges facing Agricultural Extension Services is lack of transportation making it deficit for then to reach and serve farmers in remote .
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs Abosede Owoeye urged the beneficiaries to make proper use of the facility saying the distribution of motorcycles are tools of transformation that would enable them to perform optimally.
She stressed that these machines would improve service delivery.
Owoeye however commended Governor Makinde his various efforts in ensuring food security in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Akanbi Adekoya pledged their dedication and promised to make proper use of the tool to enhance food security..
